Memo 3

Media is a big part of the human society. We learn things from media ranging from simple everyday events to our very existence on earth. Dreams can be found in many forms of media. They can be shown through the following: Movies, images, music, and even documentaries. Through my research I have found dreams through music and documentaries. Research can be found anywhere you just have to know where to find it.

In my third memo the first site I found was on the discovery channel webpage. I found a video that related to one of my research questions. The video was about how amnesiacs dream about something or somewhere they had been, but don’t remember being to the place the once dreamt about. It showed how the amnesiacs would draw a picture of their dreams and someone would take them to that place going off of the descriptions from the art work. Dreams are created by thoughts and events during our waking periods. That is one of the reasons why I picked this video because even though they have amnesia their brains still capture what their eyes see. Therefore, they dream what they saw before they went to sleep even though their amnesia blocks out that memory. Which leads back to my research question, dreams come from events we saw last before sleeping. This just goes to show that just because we as individuals might not remember, our dreams will.

Another media example I chose was a song by sleeping with sirens. The song was “If I’m James Dean, you’re Audrey Hepburn.” This song came to mind because it related to another one of my research questions very well. In the song Kellin Quinn (lead singer) is singing about a girl he is in love with. It related to my research because it shows how thinking about something constantly can cause you to dream about it. He thought about this girl for so long after they broke up because he missed her and could not get his mind off of her. Like in his song he wrote “What my dreams are made of Can't fall asleep, can't fall asleep I lay in my bed awake, in my bed awake at night As I dream of you I'll fall in love, you'll fall in love It could mean everything, everything to me I can't imagine being anywhere else.” Since he missed how they used to be and how they fell in love and said love was forever he had dreams of them falling in love all over again. That is why I picked this song because if he had not thought about her so much she would not have made her appearance in his dreams. That is the very reason why this song ties to my research question on how dreams are caused by our thoughts.

My second song was “Lonely Lullaby” buy Owl City. After not only knowing the song, but reading the lyrics as well I knew this song could relate. In this song he is singing about Annmarie and how much he loved her. She was his everything, his dream come true, but she left. He keeps saying that he would rather dream than live in reality because unlike reality in his dreams she is always there. Like stated in the following: “I sang my princess fast asleep, 'Cause she was my dream come true, Oh Annmarie, believe me, I loved you. But now those lonely lullabies just dampen my tired eyes, because I can't forget you. Because I can't forget you.
I'll dissolve when the rain pours in, when the nightmares take me, I will scream with the howling wind, 'Cause it's a bitter world and I'd rather dream.” This relates to my research topic because dreams are caused by thoughts and where he thinks about her so much his mind has no choice but to replay it in his sleep.

Many things can grab ones attention, but media is one of the biggest sources of all. By using any little bit of media it can grab the attention of an audience, fans, researchers, or even everyday people. I used media from music and video/documentaries to find some of the information needed to complete my research. My three media examples helped me not only learn more about my topic, but see that answers to our questions are all around us. It might take time, but no matter the question it can be answered if we look around.

Memo 3: Media

"Lonely Lullaby"

I chose this song because he is singing about Annmarie and how he loved her. He is singing this song because she was his everything, now shes gone. She was his dream come true therefore, he would rather dream than live in reality because unlike reality in his dreams shes always there.

Memo 3: Media

"If I'm James Dean, You're Audrey Hepburn"

I chose the song "If I'm James Dean, You're Audrey Hepburn"
I chose this song because the lead singer Kellin Quinn is singing about this girl he loves. He was away from her after they broke up and he missed her terribly. He always thought about her and how they used to be when they said love is forever. He had dreams about her because of his constant thinking. He told her if she wanted he would show her what his dreams were made of when he dreamt of her. In the song he wrote "What my dreams are made of
Can't fall asleep, can't fall asleep
I lay in my bed awake, in my bed awake at night
As I dream of you
I'll fall in love, you'll fall in love
It could mean everything, everything to me
I can't imagine being anywhere else"
When he dreamt of her because he missed her and loved her so much he always had dreams of them falling inlove together again.
This goes with Memo #1 because my research showed that dreams are created by many things including our thoughts. In this song he dreamt of her because he always thought about her.

Memo 3: Media

Are dreams a window into our unconscious?

Sigmund Freud thought that dreams were a peek into the unconscious thoughts of humans. There have been studies to indicate he could have been onto something. According to PBS, amnesiacs reported dreaming about things that happened before they went to sleep, even though they did not have any conscious memory of those events happening in real life.

Link:
This link shows how amnesiacs say they dreamt things that happened before they went to sleep that they don't even remember.  Even though they had these dreams and don't remember where they came from their mind still stored what the eyes saw. Therefore, even though the individuals don't remember what they had done or where they had been their dreams show them during their periods of sleep.

Memo 2

When we dream why do we sometimes have the ones that keep recurring? That is a question almost everyone wonders at some point in life. For years no one has really had the answer to that specific question. Researchers figured out where dreams originated, but it has always been a bigger concern on why some keep reappearing. Now that we have the answers the only thing left to do is use it to educate others. Recurring dreams have always been a mystery till now.

Ever wondered why you kept have that same dream over and over again? Many people have had recurring dreams, but had no idea what so ever, why. That's why sleep experts like Michael Breus have PhDs for sleeping and dreaming related circumstances (see foot note). Specialists like Dr. Breus have researched dreams to educate us and answer those types of questions. Another Expert Dr. Daniel Condron (Dream Researcher at the School of Metaphysics) has a theory that recurring dreams represent a message or a question. Just like all sleep experts they both believe recurring dreams are just our normal dreams except these are known for translating unseen information, otherwise known as messages. These types of dreams seem to replay over and over again only because they are not acknowledged the first time. Since we dream based on what happens every day it would be impossible to have the same exact dreams since our brain takes in things from daily events. They keep appearing because normally they are created by something that troubles us. These are normally negative dreams rather than mirthful ones. The recurring dreams happen because there are things we avoid or do not deal with. After so long of avoiding something, but still thinking about it our dreams become focused on that one problem. Individuals are so used to ignoring dreams and using the typical saying "it was just a dream". In their minds this is helping, but what it is really doing is giving a message that dreams are not important. Everyone has at least one thing they fear or stress about, because of that recurring dreams are extremely common.

Believe it or not there are ways to stop recurring dreams. Many have believed that when you dream there are no ways to stop one from happening, but there is. Some have said that recurring dreams are not always easy to get rid of, because they are not just dreams that come from nowhere they are actual real-life obstacles we face. Therefore, a simple way to avoid the annoying rerun of dreams is to face that situation and overcome it. To relieve all of the constant recurring dreams people must learn to either let go of something, or stop to calm down and work through their problems. They only occur repeatedly because of our emotional state or the troubles we have. This is sometimes a struggle, because people do not always realize they are avoiding something until they dream. These dreams open our eyes to show us what is really going on if we happen to miss it during waking periods. There are many reasons why researchers say these dreams will not just go away. One reason is because until you start working with the recurring dreams they will just continue to reappear. They will normally start to change over a period of time, but not go completely away until you fix your problems within. Even if that means letting go of a break-up or just getting over a fear. Recurring dreams normally come after a fight, conflict, or stressful situation. This is why it is not always so simple to ease these dreams. They are hard to stop because of the fact that they feed off of our emotions and events in everyday life. Dreams truly are the keys to our subconscious.

Recurring dreams can be a pain, but research shows people do not need to ignore them we need to pay more attention to them. The one thing people need to understand is that dreams only keep recurring because us individuals keep repeating the same steps, and running into the same old obstacles. These types of dreams are not bad to have; they are more of an eye opener instead. We often see dreams as little night skits, but they are way more than that. If we did not have these dreams some of us might not have known that we had so many problems within ourselves. Dreams show us who we are, they show us what were capable of.

For my follow up i will be reaching away from the my opinions, experts opinions, and the civilians opinions and go more towards media. I will show how you can find dream related things in music, TV, movies, etc. This will hopefully show people that you can find anything and relate it to questions you may have. I will find examples and underneath that i will explain my reasons for choosing them. The examples i choose will make others see we are surrounded by research.

  •    This article was about where dreams come from. It talks about how we consider dreams to be something that helps us cope and manage through stressful situations. Like our brains are machines that function to feed us dreams that help us mend broken emotions.

  •    This was created by Ernest Hartmann.

  •    I liked this article a lot because it had not only tons of information, but the fact that it had stories in it to help break down what he was trying to get across. It was very helpful and very interesting. I learned a lot from this article and I feel it helped my research a great deal.

v  dreams may express unconscious thoughts. There is also information about how dreams may fulfill functions we don’t even understand yet.

v  Kantrowitz, Karen, Springen, Pat, Wingert, Josh, Ulick

I really like this one because I know it’s reliable and it seems like it would back up my topic a good bit.

Oak, Manali. "Psychology of Dreams." www.buzzle.com. 2000-2011. 10 November 2011

v  This article is about why we dream. Even though the whole reason we dream is somewhat unknown this shows some of what we do know. It almost seems like its talking about how our dreams function help us cope or express our feelings.

v  It was created by Manali Oak.

v  I liked this one a lot because it actually covered everything I’ve been wondering as far as dreaming. This tells why and everything I really like this.

v  This article I also liked a lot for many reasons. One was because it talks about everything I need to know or would like to know. Another was how most thoughts or memories are in our minds, but is expressed more upfront in our dreams. Most is kept from us when were awake. Therefore, the dreams are what show us our thoughts that are hidden from us when we are awake.

v  Created by Paul Lippmann and Hilary Hoge.

v  I liked this one almost more than any others because it covers a lot of information even things I didn’t know were possible to think about.

Conclusion: Memo 1

Connecting back to my hypothesis, I was correct. Through my surveys I came to find out more people really do believe dreams come from our thoughts. The majority of respondents said they felt dreams seem to be impacted more by individual's mentallity along with their feelings. My respondents felt thoughts were the main reason we dream, but also our moods, because without moods dreams would be dull pictures. Based on the data I have collected, I can now see that my question was able enough for bing researched; and that people do affect their dreams by the way they act and those things they think about.

Follow Up: Memo 1

In my follow up I will be focusing more with how we really have an impact on dreams we have. Farther than just how dreams beome affected by our everyday lives. I will focus on how more than just us as individuals affect our dreams. After I find more research and see more points of views I will repeat what I did with my first set of information. When I review all of my information I will study it and look for more patterns.

Data Analysis: Memo 1

Females aging from 14-24 view dreams as reiterations of things we think throughout the day including our actions.

Once I received my research back I reviewed what my respondents had said. One of the patterns I noticed was the True/False questions. The 88% of females put that moods are a big part of dreams. They believe moods go along with actions and our thoughts to create dreams. With that being said I noticed another 38% all seemed to feel dreams can also be affected by thoughts more than anything. Respondents have also said all these feelings fall in with the last thoughts before we go to sleep. Approximately, 56% of respondents stated that dreams are normally based off the last things they thought before bed. The majority said that when they thought before bed their dreams were mainly about that one thought. This shows me that thoughts are what most believe cause our dreams.

The way respondents viewed the different moods that affect our dreams varied.

Looking back to my results I acknowledged the different patterns between male and females. When it came to which moods affect our dreams the most it differed between the genders. When I observed figure one I saw males tend to lean more towards jubilant feelings. The whole 40% of the males chose the happier moods that affect our dreams. On the other hand, females tended to lean more towards negative emotions. I saw that 44% of the females responded with moods such as depression, pain, worry, and stress. When I saw this I knew I had found a pattern stronger than any, it was the difference in genders.

Context for Memo 1

My target audience, or respondents are teens or early adulthood. I chose these ages because younger people tend to think more. Teens and young adults are still maturing and growing up; therefore they are still going through relationships, and constantly working their minds through problems. In the midst of my sampling procedure I noticed my survey needed revising. I had a few questions that did not fully help me during research. Therefore, I had to go through my survey and change a smattering amount of questions to relate to the topic better. Afterwards, I started to get the responses I needed.

Hypothesis for Memo 1

Dreams are known to be caused by many situations, or events we look forward or look back on. Dream experts Lauri Loewenberg and Ian Wallace say dreams could be based off of thoughts, actions, or moods. My hypothesis is that dreams are more based on thoughts than moods, but moods will play a big part too.

Questions

What i want to know is there are all kinds of dreams, which effects your dreams more, when you have a bad day or a good one? Many people might think that dreams come from mad emotions, but i believe they could also come from bad emotions as well. How does our state of mind affect our dreams? What if your dreams were actually trying to tell you something was going to happen in the future? What if dreams were really the keys to our subconscience? Should dreams be considered important? Why do some people have the same reoccuring dreams? These are all the questions i am going to try to find. They are interesting and they are found to be most common questions people have.

The Twist between Dreams and Reality

Dreams that we may acquire are more than just simple optics we see in our sleep. They run much deeper than that. Many believe that dreams are just our minds replaying antecedent events from our lives. Are our minds really replaying past events, or are they trying to tell us fated information? Or is
our mind like a copying mechanism working through issues from our daily life while we sleep?  Experts ask themselves these questions every day. When people dream there are few like me that actually wonder why. The more people think the more they realize that dreams could contain important hidden truths. Some believe that our dreams are not only influenced by past events, but upcoming events as well. Some believe these different mental pictures show us our emotional innervations towards something or someone.  Dreams are the backdrops of what we stress about all day or worry about, our everyday lives. When we sleep we see many things all night, but we are believed to only dream what we show a sense of emotion towards is projected into our heads. Our predilection or disrelish towards events or beings are the backgrounds to our dreams. As Henry David Thoreau once stated “Dreams are the touchstones of our characters.”
