Media is a big part of the human society. We learn things from media ranging from simple everyday events to our very existence on earth. Dreams can be found in many forms of media. They can be shown through the following: Movies, images, music, and even documentaries. Through my research I have found dreams through music and documentaries. Research can be found anywhere you just have to know where to find it.
In my third memo the first site I found was on the discovery channel webpage. I found a video that related to one of my research questions. The video was about how amnesiacs dream about something or somewhere they had been, but don’t remember being to the place the once dreamt about. It showed how the amnesiacs would draw a picture of their dreams and someone would take them to that place going off of the descriptions from the art work. Dreams are created by thoughts and events during our waking periods. That is one of the reasons why I picked this video because even though they have amnesia their brains still capture what their eyes see. Therefore, they dream what they saw before they went to sleep even though their amnesia blocks out that memory. Which leads back to my research question, dreams come from events we saw last before sleeping. This just goes to show that just because we as individuals might not remember, our dreams will.
Another media example I chose was a song by sleeping with sirens. The song was “If I’m James Dean, you’re Audrey Hepburn.” This song came to mind because it related to another one of my research questions very well. In the song Kellin Quinn (lead singer) is singing about a girl he is in love with. It related to my research because it shows how thinking about something constantly can cause you to dream about it. He thought about this girl for so long after they broke up because he missed her and could not get his mind off of her. Like in his song he wrote “What my dreams are made of Can't fall asleep, can't fall asleep I lay in my bed awake, in my bed awake at night As I dream of you I'll fall in love, you'll fall in love It could mean everything, everything to me I can't imagine being anywhere else.” Since he missed how they used to be and how they fell in love and said love was forever he had dreams of them falling in love all over again. That is why I picked this song because if he had not thought about her so much she would not have made her appearance in his dreams. That is the very reason why this song ties to my research question on how dreams are caused by our thoughts.
My second song was “Lonely Lullaby” buy Owl City. After not only knowing the song, but reading the lyrics as well I knew this song could relate. In this song he is singing about Annmarie and how much he loved her. She was his everything, his dream come true, but she left. He keeps saying that he would rather dream than live in reality because unlike reality in his dreams she is always there. Like stated in the following: “I sang my princess fast asleep, 'Cause she was my dream come true, Oh Annmarie, believe me, I loved you. But now those lonely lullabies just dampen my tired eyes, because I can't forget you. Because I can't forget you.
I'll dissolve when the rain pours in, when the nightmares take me, I will scream with the howling wind, 'Cause it's a bitter world and I'd rather dream.” This relates to my research topic because dreams are caused by thoughts and where he thinks about her so much his mind has no choice but to replay it in his sleep.
Many things can grab ones attention, but media is one of the biggest sources of all. By using any little bit of media it can grab the attention of an audience, fans, researchers, or even everyday people. I used media from music and video/documentaries to find some of the information needed to complete my research. My three media examples helped me not only learn more about my topic, but see that answers to our questions are all around us. It might take time, but no matter the question it can be answered if we look around.
